Joe Danger Studio Says Design Documents "Insane"
Design documents are ofttimes required in game creation, only the studio apartment that created Joe Danger doesn't believe in them.
A videogame's design document is often considered its "Good Book." Along the development process, designers can looking at to the document to know where they can and can't live on. Though this is somewhat of a standard in game development, Hello Games of Joe Danger fame thinks software documentation in game creation is useless.
Sean Gilbert Murray of Hello Games late aforementioned at the Eurogamer Expo: "You can't have design documents." He thinks: "Committal to writing what a game is departure to follow is just an moonstruck idea."
"Information technology's like sitting down to write a recipe and never actually cooking something," Murray added. He justifies his position by referring to classical Japanese games that were designed though experimentation and iteration, preferably than typing thousands of words and following on an synopsis. "I don't think you could design Street Fighter 2 on paper," helium said. "You wouldn't know if it was entertaining or not. Everything I've read or so those developers is that everything was iterative, everything was 'cooked'."
Hello Games was able to free itself from the conception written document by remaining an case-by-case developer and self-publishing though the PlayStation Network. "We had the benefit of not having a publisher, we had clock to develop things, we weren't driven by milestones," helium reveals. Murray says that because of this, Hello Games give the sack make improve products: "We don't undergo a publishing house, we have gamers. And gamers tell us what they want."
If the method of creating a videogame is to truly approach that of fine art, Murray is right that it likely shouldn't be overly genuine. Would Picasso have written down exactly where he was going to paint on a canvas? Existence locked into a document would look to rule out some of the freedom needed to the let in cool new features that a studio comes up with along the fly.
